Cable Bulkheads

To prevent a fire from spreading to the surrounding parts of the building, the installations in the wall and ceiling openings must be sealed. Cable penetration seals limit the spread of fire and smoke and are therefore the basic prerequisite for safety in the event of a fire.

Functioning cable penetration seals are particularly important because electrical cables and pipes are also routed through ceilings and walls that enclose rooms.

Professional cable routing

Certain requirements must be met for professional cable routing:

  • Ensuring a functioning room seal
  • The surfaces of the cables, pipes and cable support systems on the side facing away from the fire must not heat up beyond a certain level
  • Fire and smoke cannot pass through

In order to assess the fire behavior of building components, certain standard characteristics of the fire progression have been agreed upon and tested according to the standard temperature-time curve (ETK).

The ETK specifies the temperature and fire curve in which the fire behavior of the component is to be classified. The actual fire times may deviate from the ETK curve, as this is a simulation model.

Cable penetration seals from Niedax

Niedax offers a broad portfolio of components for cable penetration seal.

These include BSB 90 fire protection blocks and BSS 90 fire protection plugs, which are room-enclosing components that prevent the spread of fire and smoke in the transition between two fire compartments.

The Blocks and plugs are made of a permanently elastic, closed-pored, insulation-forming foam material of fire resistance category EI 90

Fire protection blocks BSB 90 and fire protection plugs BSS 90 can be used to create passages for cables and pipes in walls and ceilings.

For small openings, the fire protection compound BSM 90 can be used.
Combination penetration seals with fire protection blocks BSB 90 or fire protection plugs BSS 90 may be installed in masonry, concrete or reinforced concrete, aerated concrete and lightweight partition walls of stud construction (steel substructure) and planking on both sides made of fire protection plates as well as in ceilings made of concrete or reinforced concrete or aerated concrete of fire resistance duration EI 90 (F 90).

The following components are permitted to be passed through:

  •  electrical cables and lines of all types (including optical fibres) with the exception of so-called waveguide cables
  •  cable bundles
  •  cable support structures made of steel, aluminium or plastic
  •  electrical installation pipes made of plastic
  •  and many more

The cable penetration seal with fire protection compound BSM 90 may be installed in masonry, concrete or reinforced concrete, aerated concrete and lightweight partition walls in stud construction (steel substructure) and planking on both sides made of fire protection plates as well as in ceilings made of concrete or reinforced concrete or aerated concrete of fire resistance duration EI 90 (F 90).

In case of penetrations sealed with fire protection compound BSM 90, electrical cables and lines of all types (including fibre optic cables) may be installed with the exception of so-called waveguide cables with an outer diameter of max. 18 mm.
